Felipe II de España

Felipe II (1527-1598), fue rey de España desde 1556 hasta su muerte, de Nápoles y Sicilia desde 1554 y de Portugal y los Algarves desde 1580. Durante su reinado la monarquía española llegó a ser la primera potencia de Europa, con territorios en todos los continentes.

A raíz de la toma de Cádiz por la escuadra anglo-holandesa en 1596, Felipe II tomó la decisión de fortificar la ciudad, como así se hizo, dando comienzo a la reconstrucción de la ciudad.

El retrato fue hecho después de 1590, en los últimos años de su vida.

Philip II of Spain

Philip II (1527-1598), was king of Spain from 1556 until his death, as well as king of Naples and Sicily from 1554 and of Portugal and the Algarves from 1580. During his reign Spain became the first power in Europe, with territories on all continents.

Following the capture and destruction of Cádiz by the Anglo-Dutch fleet in 1596, Philip II made the decision to fortify the city, which was done, and so begun the city’s reconstruction.

The portrait was done in the last years of his life, about 1590.

Puertas de la Mar

Construidas por Ignacio Sala en 1735, demolidas en 1916 por el alcalde Cayetano del Toro.

El segundo plano acompañaba a una carta de Ignacio Sala a José Patiño (1666-1736), Secretario de Estado de Felipe V.

Puertas de la Mar (Sea Gates)

These Sea Gates were built by Ignacio Sala in 1735 and demolished in 1916 by Mayor Cayetano del Toro.

The second plan accompanied a letter from Ignacio Sala to José Patiño (1666-1736), Secretary of State to Philip V.
