Anton van den Wyngaerde, 1567
Anton van den Wyngaerde, en España Antonio de las Viñas, debió nacer entre 1512 y 1525, en Amberes. Desde 1557 estuvo al servicio del rey Felipe II, quien le encargó recorrer España dibujando sus pueblos y ciudades. Lo hizo entre 1562 y 1571, con gran minuciosidad y originalidad, creando una colección de gran valor artístico y geográfico. El grabador flamenco Christoph Plantin tuvo la intención de grabar y publicar los dibujos, y tal era también el deseo del rey, pero no llegó a hacerse. Los dibujos están actualmente repartidos entre la Biblioteca Nacional de Austria (la mayor parte), el Victoria and Albert Museum de Londres y el Ashmolean Museum de Oxford.
Los dibujos se han publicado en Ciudades del Siglo de Oro: Las Vistas Españolas de Anton van den Wyngaerde, varios autores, El Viso, 2008.

Views of Spanish towns: Cádiz and Puerto de Santa María
Anton van den Wyngaerde, 1567
Anton van den Wyngaerde, known in Spain as Antonio de las Viñas, was born in Antwerp sometime between 1512 and 1525. From 1557 onwards he was at the service of Philip II of Spain, who commissioned him to travel around Spain drawing its towns and villages. He did so from 1562 to 1571 with thoroughness and originality, creating a collection of great artistic and geographical value. The Flemish engraver Christoph Plantin intended to print and publish the drawings, which was also the desire of the king, but this was never done. The drawings are currently distributed among the Austrian National Library (most of them), the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford.
The drawings have been published in Cities of the Golden Age: The Spanish Views by Anton van den Wyngaerde, various authors, El Viso, 2008.

Las Ciudades del Mundo
Publicado como complemento al Theatrum Orbis Terrarum de Abraham Ortelius (ver ESPACIO UNO), es el mayor conjunto de dibujos de ciudades de la Edad Moderna.
George Braun (1541-1622) fue un cartógrafo alemán, canónigo de la catedral de Colonia. Se rodeó de un equipo de colaboradores con los que abordó su gran obra, que llegó a ver publicada en su totalidad debido a su longevidad.
Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590), grabador flamenco, había participado en la elaboración del Theatrum Orbis Terrarum antes de contribuir con sus grabados al Civitatis.
Cities of the World
Published as a complement to the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum by Abraham Ortelius (see SPACE ONE), this was the largest set of drawings of towns of Modern Age.
George Braun (1541-1622) was a German cartographer and canon at the Cologne Cathedral. He assembled a team of collaborators with whom he embarked on his great work, which in his later years he finally saw published in its entirety.
Franz Hogenberg (1535-1590), a Flemish engraver, had collaborated on the edition of the Theatrum Orbis Terrarum before contributing his engravings to the Civitatis.

Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600), autor de la mayoría de los dibujos de Civitatis, fue un artista flamenco del Renacimiento, con obras en varios museos de Europa y América. Viajó por toda Europa, incluida España, realizando los dibujos que grabó Franz Hogenberg, como los de Cádiz que se incluyen a continuación, que pertenecen al Libro Quinto, páginas 17 y 19, del citado ejemplar de la Biblioteca del Congreso de los EE UU.

Joris Hoefnagel (1542-1600), author of most of the drawings in Civitatis, was a Flemish artist of the Renaissance, whose works are in various museums in Europe and America. He travelled throughout Europe, including Spain, making the drawings Franz Hogenberg later engraved, such as the following ones of Cádiz, which are in Book Five (pages 17 and 19) of the copy housed in the U. S. Library of Congress.
The original preparatory sketches are in the Austrian National Library, together with those of Wyngaerde.

Gabriel Bodenehr es el autor del libro Curiosas Ciudades y Teatro de varios sucesos de Guerra en España, de 1717, incluido en el ESPACIO NUEVE.
Esta vista está también incluida en el ángulo inferior izquierdo del mapa Accurata Designatio celebris freti prope Andalusiae Castellum Gibraltar de Matthäus Seutter (ver en el ESPACIO CUATRO).
Perspective of the famous sea port of Cádiz
Gabriel Bodenehr was the author of Curious Cities and Theatre of Several War Battles in Spain, published in1717 and featured in SPACE NINE.
This view is also included in the lower left corner of Matthäus Seutter's map entitled Accurata Designatio Celebris freti prope Andalusiae Castellum Gibraltar (see in SPACE FOUR).

Nicolas Marie Ozanne (1728-1811) fue ingeniero naval y pintor francés. Luis XVI le encargó la Colección de los Puertos de Francia.
Obviamente estas vistas no representan a Cádiz, ciudad cuyo nombre se utiliza por ser en la época uno de los puertos más importantes de Europa.

Nicolas Marie Ozanne (1728-1811) was a French naval engineer and painter who was commissioned by Louis XVI to make the Collection of the Ports of France.
Obviously, these views do not represent Cádiz, a city whose name was used because it was at the time one of the main ports in Europe.

Antonio Ponz Piquer, el abate Ponz (1725-1792) fue académico de la Historia y secretario de la Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. Publicó su Viaje de España, o Cartas en que se da noticia de las cosas más apreciables y dignas de saberse que hay en ella, tras realizar el correspondiente viaje por encargo de Campomanes, ministro de hacienda de Carlos III. Consta de dieciocho tomos, el último póstumo. Las imágenes de Cádiz aquí incluidas son del tomo XVII, hay otras de menor interés en el XVIII.
Publicó también Viaje fuera de España, un recorrido por Europa.

Antonio Ponz Piquer, Abbe Ponz (1725-1792) was an academic of History and secretary of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando. He published his Trip to Spain, or Letters in which news are given of the most valuable and worth knowing things which are in it, after making the corresponding trip on behalf of Campomanes, Carlos III's finance minister. It consists of eighteen volumes, the last posthumous. The images of Cádiz included here are from volume 17th, there are others of less interest in the 18th.
He also published Trip outside Spain, a tour of Europe.
